Life, liberty and the pursuit in the literary world

It seems that nearly every writers' website contains a bio or an "about me" page. Who am I to interfere with a raging
trend? Besides, I am rather vainglorious and like talking about myself.
I am a native Floridian, living as an ex-pat Deep Fried Southerner in Denton, Texas. With my fondness for beaches,
mountains, kudzu, pork barbeque (the only real barbeque), and slow drawls, it took me a while to get used to this
state. But I like it here now. Texans seem to have embraced me as one of their own.
Currently, I am enrolled at the University of North Texas in the Creative Writing program, pursuing my master's
degree in creative nonfiction. How do you get a degree in a genre that defines itself by what it isn't? That is a long
answer!
My previous writing credits include two stints as a reporter for small town weekly newspaper, one of which required
me to wait in freezing rain to take a photograph of a coonhound worth $250,000. That was before the days of cell
phones, so you can imagine how terrified my wife was when I finally returned home at 3 a.m..
I have also worked as the editor of a major Washington, D.C., bank's employee newsletter, the editor of a nationally
published genealogy magazine, and just finished as the editor-in-chief of the North Texas Review, UNT's literary and
art journal. In addition to that, I have edited two family histories for clients, a book on earning scholarships, and a
book of Irish poetry.
As if that wasn't enough, I have also worked as the office manager for WorldCom, a typesetter (remember those
days?), a UNIX engineer for a prepaid calling card company, a farrier, an organic farmer, twice as the receiving clerk
for Borders, a church janitor, and a minister. Don't ask about any of those. You'll have to wait for the essays to be
published.
I live in a small apartment in Denton with my Yankee wife and two cats. I graduated from Stetson University (DeLand,
Florida) in 1985 with a B.A. in English.
